9th February 2018

Yet another busy week with motivated children in Year 1! Just one more week of hard work then the children will have a well-deserved rest (and the staff!).

Just a reminder that it is Sports for Champions on Monday, therefore, children can come into school in their sporty clothes ready for our activities! Thank you so much for your sponsorship and if you haven't yet handed in the form and the money please can you make sure you do on Monday morning.

English: We have continued the work we started last week when we were comparing the two Grandmas in the Katie Morag story when we were thinking of adjectives to describe Grannie Island and Grandma Mainland. This week the children recorded the similarities and differences on a Venn diagram. They then wrote some interesting sentences about each Grandma making good use of the adjectives. Next week they are going to write their own Katie Morag story. In preparation for this we have discussed the setting, characters, and problems that might happen in their own stories. They also thought about the beginning, middle and end of their story.

Maths: We have finished our work on subtraction and the children really got the hang of the strategies taught. We then moved on to addition and subtraction families. This really flummoxed some of our more able mathematician who wanted to add their own calculations into the mix! We discussed the family always having the same three numbers and I told the children at Joe’s school they call it BOGOF buy one get one free (although you actually get 3 free!) For example:

6 + 8 = 14

8 + 6 = 14

14 – 8 = 6

14 – 6 = 8

We will keep revisiting this so that the children have a really good understanding of the concept of addition, subtraction and inverse numbers.

Phonics: The children have learnt the alternatives for ‘or’ - ‘aw’ as in claw, paw and yawn - ‘au’ as in launch, pause, August. ‘oa’ – ‘oe’ as in toe, hoe and dominoes. ‘ph’ as in photo, phonics and alphabet. ‘wh’ as in when, where, whale. They have been reading and writing these words in our phonics lessons.

Science: We have been looking at different bulbs, snowdrops, daffodils, hyacinth and tulips. We will be talking about the seasons and what happens to plants.

Have a lovely weekend.
